Two-Month Demonstration Proposal

IN SUMMARY

This project will provide additional public transportation capacity during the high pollution and high traffic season, one which will in this case be further aggravated by the holding of Super Bowl XXX. This service will do so by using an otherwise grossly underutilized transportation resource in the Valley: its railroad lines.

It will also allow an opportunity for an extensive collection of invaluable information, thorough surveys of both residents and visitors, which can be used for planning an effective rail transportation system for the Valley.

In addition, there will be immediate, permanent, benefits that will accrue from the project:

• The grade crossing projects are viable safety projects in their own right.

• The railroad speed increases will contribute to improving the air quality situation by reducing grade crossing delays for motor vehicles, as well as for allowing more efficient train operations.

• Existing Amtrak passenger train operations, as well as improvements which may occur to them (daily operation on the Sunset Limited, day train service to Los Angeles, etc.) will benefit from the railroad improvements and improvement of the Tempe Amtrak Station.
