Amtrak service to Phoenix, Tempe, and Coolidge ceased June 2, 1996. At that time, operations over the line shown below ceased. Trains now run west from Picacho to Wellton.
In October and November 1996, the Gila (Main) Line was twice closed by derailments near Gila Bend (see below) forcing all trains to reroute via Phoenix. The line today remains sufficiently intact to allow such reroutes.
