Arizona Rail Passenger Association

Proposition 1 Argument

Argument in Support of Proposition #1:

The quality of the air we breathe directly affects our health and well-being. For this reason, the American Lung Association of Arizona has made preserving air quality in Phoenix a major priority. This is why we support Proposition 1, the traffic reduction plan.

We know that healthy people are essential to a healthy economy. We know that an improved transit system is essential to our efforts to clean the air. Therefore, we conclude that Proposition 1 will improve the health and wealth of our citizens. This will

truly be a win-win proposition for Phoenix.

Economic growth and environmental quality are sometimes presented as an either- or situation. It makes more sense to think of them as complements to each other. In Phoenix, people suffering from respiratory symptoms or illness lose thousands of work and

school days due to ozone and particulate matter concentrations above the current federal standards. We divert millions of dollars to people suffering from preventable health damage. It is widely accepted that poor health resulting from environmental hazards is a drain on our economy.

What is at stake? In essence, this vote is about quality of life, about our health and wealth.

We urge Phoenix voters to vote yes on Propositions 1 and 2.
