Our population is going to double in the next twenty years. We already have the widest streets with more lanes than any U.S. city. Our freeways are being built, but unfortunately, they are twenty years too late because the naysayers fought against them for so long.
It's unlikely that we'll be able to build additional freeways in congested areas because neighborhoods won't tolerate the disruption to their tranquillity--and rightly so.
So, we already have the widest streets and it's unlikely we'll be able to build any new freeways in congested areas yet our population will double in twenty years.
If you think we're congested now, how are we going to get around then?
The "No" campaign suggests that the solution is to charge you a toll to use the freeways during rush hour. We paid for these freeways with our sales taxes, now they want to charge us to use them.
They also suggest that private jitneys can solve the problem. Sounds good on its face, but there are no systems operating. Why? Because private jitneys haven't been able to make a profit and stay in business. And the opponents know that. Let's not let them do to this plan what they did to the freeways. They already set us back twenty years on freeways; now they want to do it again on this plan.
We need solutions to our congestion, not hollow schemes. Let's get our 4-way left turn arrows and bus pollouts to keep traffic flowing. And, let's build a convenient bus system that commuters will use. That's the solution!
