In addition to excursion service provided by the San Pedro & Southwestern [now suspended], Amtrak's Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle stop briefly on the UP (SP) mainline in Benson, Arizona.

In January 1996, Jim Davenport wrote:

Benson is now on a double track railroad. The Southern Pacific has completed the second main track from Chamiso to just west of the San Pedro River bridge. The new bridge for the second main is nearing completion. The siding at Benson was ripped up to make way for the second track. A new subgrade was installed and then rail panels laid down; more ballast was then dumped and welded rail installed to replace the jointed rail from the panels.

This construction process resulted in the 200 foot asphalt platform being ripped up. However, preformed concrete slabs were installed to provide Amtrak patrons with a safe path over the new track. Whether the asphalt platform will be replaced is not known.

As of December 2000, the full platform had not been replaced, with only the approximately eight-foot-wide swath of asphalt to the tracks remaining.

The new (1999) "City of Benson Railroad Station and Visitor Center" is not yet used by Amtrak. It is, however, equipped with benches for waiting, six of which (on side opposite the above photo) are sheltered. Altogether this is a far more suitable rail station than the "tin shack" currently in use.
