Arizona Rail Passenger Association

RESOLUTION
Amtrak West
10 January 1998
- Whereas,
- The need for rail service between Southern Arizona and California will only
grow as Los Angeles and Phoenix become the second and third largest metro areas
by 2005; and
- Whereas,
- These cities' airports are increasingly congested, as are the highways
between them; and
- Whereas,
- The second and sixth largest cities in the United States, separated by only
four hundred miles, can support more than occasional passenger rail service; and
- Whereas,
- If the Sunset Limited were increased to daily service, and operated through
Phoenix, it would still not meet these travel needs;
- Therefore be it resolved:
-
- That the Arizona Rail Passenger Association requests that Arizona be
entirely incorporated into Amtrak West;
- That the Arizona Rail Passenger Association requests that Amtrak West
explore the operation of passenger rail service between Los Angeles and Tucson
via Phoenix;
- That Amtrak West be asked to pattern said passenger rail service after the
recently announced Los Angeles - Las Vegas service, and operate it a minimum of
once daily in each direction;
- That copies of this RESOLUTION be sent to the Acting President of Amtrak,
the President of Amtrak Intercity, the Union Pacific Railroad, the Governor of
Arizona, the Governor of California, the New Mexico Association of Railroad
Passengers, the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, and the Tucson Chamber of Commerce
PASSED this 10th Day of January, 1998, at Tucson, Arizona
