Mary Peters was appointed Director of the Arizona Department of Transportation by Governor Jane Hull in 1997. Under Ms. Peters' leadership, the Arizona High Speed Rail study completed its first phase. She is establishing "Maximum Configuration" standards for Arizona highways -- our roads will not be expanded beyond six or eight lanes. Ms. Peters continues to work to bring multi-modalism to Arizona. As she stated at the Dinner, "We stopped being the Arizona Department of Highways in 1974; it's time we acted that way." |

Jerry Colangelo is a strong supporter of rail in Arizona. In April of 1998 he was a driving force in the operation of the Diamondbacks Express train which carried baseball fans from Tempe to the Bank One Ballpark. Mr. Colangelo's motto is, "Don't be afraid to fail." Upon receiving the Loulan award, he promised to continue to work for rail and better transportation in Arizona. |
