Mr. W. Graham Claytor, Jr., President National Railroad Passenger Corporation 60 Massachusetts Avenue, N.E. Washington, D.C. 20002
Dear Mr. Claytor:
The Arizona Rail Passenger Association has learned that the City of Williams, Arizona, on the route of Amtrak's Southwest Chief, has requested that Amtrak add Williams as a regular stop on the Chief's schedule.
The Association strongly supports a regular stop in Williams. This city lies at the closest mainline rail (and highway) point to Grand Canyon National Park, one of America's most popular tourist attractions. In co-operation with the National Park Service, Grand Canyon Railway began operating regularly scheduled passenger service from Williams to Grand Canyon in 1989. This service has been very well received by the public, carrying nearly 100,000 passengers during its first 12 months of operation.
The investors in the Railway have also begun substantial development in Williams. With opportunities for abundant year-round outdoor recreation, the area offers much to establish Williams as aresort destination. For its part, Amtrak is, and will remain, the most important common carrier to serve this region of Arizona.
The Association urges Amtrak to commit to service to Williams so that the City may build a suitable platform and station. We believe that both Amtrak and the traveling public stand to benefit from introduction of this service.
Sincerely,
Jay L. Myers, Chairman
Amtrak Committee
