In Support of the Chief at Williams

October 30, 1991

Mr. W. Graham Claytor, Jr., President
National Railroad Passenger Corporation
60 Massachusetts Avenue, N.E.
Washington, D.C. 20002

Dear Mr. Claytor:

The purpose of this letter is to request Amtrak to implement service on the route of the Southwest Chief at Williams, Arizona.

We believe that the implementation of service would be advantageous to Amtrak for several reasons:

  1. Williams is the closest point on the route of the Southwest Chief to the south rim of the Grand Canyon.
  2. Williams offers an additional vacation destination for Amtrak's passengers.
  3. Williams offers the only rail link to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, which also offers significant environmental advantages to motor vehicular traffic.

We have the support of the local community, including the Grand Canyon Railway, in pursuing the implementation of service. We recognize that, among other things, the City of Williams must provide a suitable platform, lighting, parking area and an enclosed shelter.

Kindly advise me what Williams can do to provide ready access to Amtrak and to facilitate your decision to implement service here.

CITY OF WILLIAMS, ARIZONA

James Hoffman, Mayor

cc: L. Marshal Bryant, President, Grand Canyon Railway
